Beamline Visualization

Beamline visualization is the graphical representation of an experimental beamline, showing how radiation travels through optical components, reaches a sample, and produces measurements at a detector. In biochemistry, visualization links beam position, sample alignment, instrument geometry, and data-collection conditions, helping researchers understand how changes in the setup affect the recorded signal. These representations support experimental planning, real-time alignment, troubleshooting, and interpretation of structural measurements from biological molecules. By making complex instrumentation easier to inspect, beamline visualization improves communication between researchers and can help optimize experiments involving proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecular samples.

The signal-to-noise ratio of data is one of the most important considerations in performing X-ray diffraction measurements from microcrystals. The VMXm beamline provides a low-noise environment and microbeam for such experiments. Here, we describe sample preparation methods for mounting and cooling microcrystals for VMXm and other microfocus macromolecular crystallography beamlines.

The determination of the solution structure of a protein by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) requires monodisperse samples. Here, we present two possibilities to ensure minimal delays between sample preparation and data acquisition: online size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and online ion-exchange chromatography (IEC).
