Radish Cultivars

Radish cultivars are genetically distinct varieties of Raphanus sativus selected for traits such as root shape, color, maturation rate, flavor, and biochemical composition. Their characteristic pungency and potential health value depend partly on glucosinolates, sulfur-containing compounds hydrolyzed by myrosinase when tissues are cut or crushed, producing reactive products including isothiocyanates. Comparing cultivars through biochemical profiling connects genotype and growing conditions with metabolite accumulation, helping researchers evaluate nutritional quality, sensory properties, stress responses, and breeding potential for food systems and crop improvement.

Building and Operating a Low-Cost Elevated Carbon Dioxide Growth Chamber to Evaluate Microgreen Physiology under Spaceflight-Relevant CO2 Levels

2026

This protocol describes how to construct and operate a small, low-cost growth chamber capable of maintaining extreme carbon dioxide (exCO2) levels for plant experiments. The chamber enables reproducible studies of microgreen physiology under spaceflight-relevant atmospheric conditions, using a single-board computer-based monitoring and control system and a passive hydroponic wicking system.

Agrobacterium-Mediated Virus-Induced Gene Silencing Assay In Cotton

We present the detailed protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay in cotton. The tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-derived VIGS vectors were deployed to induce RNA silencing of cotton GrCLA1, Cloroplastos alterados 1 gene. The albino phenotype caused by silencing GrCLA1 was observed at the seedling stage within 2 weeks after inoculation.

Cabbage Pre-Weighing ExpandTo obtain the percent biomass of a representative cabbage before the experiment, use a paper towel to wash and pat dry the inner leaves of a grocery store cabbage. Place the cabbage into a pre-weighed Petri dish on a balance to determine the wet mass of the vegetable, and then transfer the cabbage and the dish into a 37 °C incubator for 48 hours. At the end of the incubation, weigh cabbage in the dish again to obtain the dry mass of the cabbage. Then, calculate the...

Applying an Inducible Expression System to Study Interference of Bacterial Virulence Factors with Intracellular Signaling

The method described here is used to induce the apoptotic signaling cascade at defined steps in order to dissect the activity of an anti-apoptotic bacterial effector protein. This method can also be used for inducible expression of pro-apoptotic or toxic proteins, or for dissecting interference with other signaling pathways.
