Abdominal Trauma

Abdominal trauma is physical injury to the abdominal wall or internal organs, and it matters because damage can remain hidden while rapidly causing blood loss, infection, or organ dysfunction. Blunt forces can compress or tear tissues without breaking the skin, whereas penetrating injuries disrupt the body surface and may damage organs, blood vessels, or the gastrointestinal tract; the resulting inflammatory and hemodynamic responses depend on the location and severity of injury. Studying abdominal trauma connects anatomy and physiology with emergency assessment, imaging, surgical management, and trauma research, improving recognition of internal injury and guiding interventions that reduce complications.

Pseudofracture, a reproducible murine model of sterile musculoskeletal trauma, allows for evaluation of late term post-traumatic immune responses. This article describes the procedural execution of the model step by step, including the potential for experimental model combinations to permit study of multiple trauma.

Acute Brain Trauma in Mice Followed By Longitudinal Two-photon Imaging

Acute brain trauma is a severe injury that has no adequate treatment to date. Multiphoton microscopy allows studying longitudinally the process of acute brain trauma development and probing therapeutical strategies in rodents. Two models of acute brain trauma studied with in vivo two-photon imaging of brain are demonstrated in this protocol.

Abdominal Exam IV: Acute Abdominal Pain Assessment

2023

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...

Abdominal Exam II: Percussion

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...
