Arterial Flow Measurement

Arterial flow measurement is the quantification of blood movement through arteries, a key approach for assessing circulation, tissue perfusion, and cardiovascular function. Techniques such as Doppler ultrasound estimate blood-flow velocity from frequency shifts in reflected sound waves, while vessel diameter and flow direction help determine volumetric flow and identify changes in hemodynamics. These measurements support evaluation of arterial narrowing, obstruction, aneurysms, and altered vascular resistance, and they enable researchers to study how blood pressure and vessel properties influence circulation. In biology and medicine, arterial flow data can guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of vascular health.

Positioning Laser Doppler Probe: A Technique to Implant Probe Over Middle Cerebral Artery for Blood Flow Measurement in Murine Model

2025

This video describes the surgical procedure to immobilize the laser Doppler probe over the murine brain's middle cerebral artery, or MCA. The probe helps to measure the blood flow in the brain's microvasculature by measuring the Doppler shift caused due to the motion of red blood cells within the artery.

Measuring Turbulent Flows

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Turbulent flows exhibit very high frequency fluctuations that require instruments with high time-resolution for their appropriate characterization. Hot-wire anemometers have a short enough time-response to fulfill this requirement. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry to characterize a turbulent jet. Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is useful for assessment of myocardial oxygen demand and evaluation of cardiovascular risk. This study establishes a step-by-step transthoracic Doppler echocardiographic (TTDE) method for longitudinal monitoring of the changes in CFR, as measured from coronary artery in mice, under the experimental pressure overload of aortic banding.

Ultrasound Assessment of Flow-Mediated Dilation of the Brachial and Superficial Femoral Arteries in Rats

Non-invasive assessment of endothelial function in humans can be determined by the flow-mediated dilation technique. Although thousands of studies have used this technique, no study has performed this technique non-invasively in rats. The following article describes non-invasive measurement of flow-mediated dilation in the brachial and superficial femoral arteries of rats.

Measurement of Pulmonary Artery Pressure in Rats Using Right Heart Catheterization
