Beta Signal Motif

The Beta signal motif is a short sequence pattern at the C terminus of many bacterial outer-membrane beta-barrel proteins, where it helps direct proper membrane assembly. Its conserved residues are recognized by the beta-barrel assembly machinery, particularly BamA, which coordinates insertion and folding of these proteins into the outer membrane. Studying this motif clarifies how Gram-negative bacteria build and maintain their protective envelope. It also supports research on protein targeting, membrane biogenesis, and potential antibacterial strategies that disrupt outer-membrane protein assembly.

2011

A straight-forward and robust method to identify potential regulatory motifs in co-regulated genes is presented. SCOPE does not require any user parameters and returns motifs that represent excellent candidates for regulatory signals. The identification of such regulatory signals helps to understand the underlying biology.

Techniques to dissect the mechanisms underlying the secretion of HIV-1 Nef in exosomes are described. Specific short peptides derived from Nef and protein transfection were exploited to determine the structure, function, and binding partners of Nef’s Secretion Modification Region. These procedures have general relevance in many mechanistic studies.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...
