Bovine Gamma-b Crystallin

Bovine gamma-B crystallin is a soluble lens protein that contributes to the transparency and refractive power of the eye while serving as a model for studying protein structure and stability. Its compact architecture contains two homologous domains, each formed from paired Greek-key motifs and tightly packed beta-sheets, allowing the protein to remain stable at high concentration in lens fiber cells. Structural and biochemical studies of bovine gamma-B crystallin help explain how crystallins maintain optical clarity, how changes in folding or stability can promote aggregation, and how protein-sequence variations influence molecular behavior. This makes it valuable in research on protein folding, cataract formation, and biomolecular design.

Polymer Classification: Crystallinity

2023

Unlike ionic or small covalent molecules, polymers do not form crystalline solids due to the diffusion limitations of their long-chain structures. However, polymers contain microscopic crystalline domains separated by amorphous domains. Crystalline domains are the regions where polymer chains are aligned in an orderly manner and held together in proximity by intermolecular forces. For example, chains in the crystalline domains of polyethylene and nylon are bound together by van der Waals...

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the brainstem and its neurons are maximally activated during waking and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep brain states. This work describes the experimental approach to record in vitro gamma band subthreshold membrane oscillation in PPN neurons.

Intravital Visualization of Gamma Delta Intraepithelial Lymphocytes

2025

This video demonstrates the visualization of γδ intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in transgenic mice using confocal microscopy. The surgical procedure involves creating a perforation line and making a longitudinal incision to expose the intestinal mucosa and villi. The transgenic mice express reporter proteins exclusively in γδ IELs, allowing their tracking. Intravital imaging captures the dynamic movement of green fluorescence-labeled γδ IELs along the intestinal epithelial cell's basement...

2016

A novel methodology is presented to synthesize and program main-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers using commercially available starting monomers. A wide range of thermomechanical properties was tailored by adjusting the amount of crosslinker, while the actuation performance was dependent on the amount of applied strain during programming.
