C-di-gmp Signaling

c-di-GMP signaling is a bacterial communication system that uses the cyclic dinucleotide bis-(3′-5′)-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate to coordinate cellular behaviors and adaptation. Diguanylate cyclases produce c-di-GMP from GTP, while specific phosphodiesterases break it down; changes in intracellular c-di-GMP concentration regulate effector proteins, riboswitches, and protein complexes that alter gene expression, motility, extracellular matrix production, and cell-surface attachment. This signaling network is central to the transition between motile and sessile lifestyles, including biofilm formation, and influences bacterial development, environmental persistence, and pathogenicity. Studying c-di-GMP pathways supports research on microbial ecology, host-microbe interactions, and strategies for controlling biofilm-associated infections.
