Carbon Fiber Electrodes

Carbon fiber electrodes are miniature electrochemical sensors made from conductive carbon fibers, valued for their small size, chemical stability, and suitability for measuring biological signals. Their exposed fiber tip transfers electrons during oxidation or reduction reactions, while its high surface-to-volume ratio supports sensitive detection of electroactive molecules such as neurotransmitters; surface coatings or chemical functionalization can further influence selectivity. In biology, carbon fiber electrodes enable fast measurements in individual cells, tissues, and neural systems, including real-time monitoring of dopamine and other signaling compounds. These measurements help connect cellular chemistry with physiological activity and support research in neuroscience, pharmacology, and disease mechanisms.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.
