Drug Discovery

Drug discovery is the research process used to identify and develop compounds that can prevent, diagnose, or treat disease, making it central to biology and medicine. Researchers identify a biological target, such as a protein or cellular pathway, then screen chemical or biological libraries for compounds that alter its activity; promising hits undergo lead optimization to improve potency, selectivity, stability, and absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion profiles. Preclinical testing evaluates efficacy and toxicity before clinical studies assess safety and therapeutic benefit in humans. Modern drug discovery integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, computational modeling, and high-throughput screening to advance new therapies and clarify disease mechanisms.

Drug Discovery: Overview

2023

Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...
