Epithelial Functions

Epithelial functions are the essential roles performed by epithelial tissues, which cover body surfaces, line internal organs, and form selective barriers between compartments. Through polarized cells, tight junctions, membrane transporters, and specialized secretory machinery, epithelia regulate permeability, move substances, release molecules, absorb nutrients, and protect underlying tissues from physical, chemical, and microbial threats. These functions support homeostasis in organs such as the intestine, kidney, skin, and respiratory tract, where coordinated transport and secretion control fluid balance and exchange with the environment. Understanding epithelial functions is central to studying tissue organization, disease mechanisms, wound repair, and drug absorption in biology.

Epithelial Tissues and Their Functions

2025

Epithelial tissues are large sheets of cells covering all of the surfaces of the body. These surfaces can be internal or external, for example, skin, airways, the digestive tract, the urinary system, and the reproductive system. Hollow organs and body cavities that do not connect to the body's exterior, including blood vessels and serous membranes, are lined by epithelial tissue known as the endothelium. Epithelial tissues provide the body's first line of protection from physical, chemical, and...

2017

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) aim at alleviating disease symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Thus, alternative strategies are being investigated in animal colitis models. Here, we explain how the beneficial effects of diet supplements on clinical IBD signs are analyzed in such a colitis model.

We describe the rapid isolation of primary murine type II alveolar epithelial cells (AECII) by flow cytometric negative selection. These AECII show high viability and purity and are suitable for a wide range of functional and molecular studies regarding their role in respiratory conditions such as autoimmune or infectious diseases.
