Free Nerve Endings

Free nerve endings are unencapsulated sensory nerve terminals that detect environmental and internal stimuli, making them essential for somatic sensation and protective responses. Their branching axons extend into tissues such as the skin, where mechanical, thermal, or chemical stimulation changes the membrane potential and generates signals that travel through sensory neurons to the central nervous system. Different nerve fibers and receptor properties contribute to sensations including pain, temperature, itch, and crude touch. In biology and neuroscience, studying free nerve endings helps explain sensory transduction, inflammatory responses, tissue injury, and how the nervous system identifies potentially harmful conditions.
