Gracilis Muscle

The gracilis muscle is a long, slender skeletal muscle in the medial thigh that contributes to movement and provides an important landmark in human anatomy. It crosses both the hip and knee joints, allowing it to adduct the thigh, flex the knee, and assist with medial rotation of the leg when it contracts; the obturator nerve supplies its motor function. Because of its accessible position and expendable function, the gracilis is clinically relevant in reconstructive surgery, where its muscle or tendon can help restore damaged soft tissue, repair structures, or support functional transfer procedures. Its anatomy also aids physical examination, imaging, and biomedical education.

2023

Here, we describe several protocols aiming at an integrated valorization of Gracilaria gracilis: wild species harvesting, in-house growth, and extraction of bioactive ingredients. The extracts' antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic effects are evaluated, along with the nutritional and stability assessment of food enriched with whole seaweed biomass and pigments.

Ex Vivo Assessment of Contractility, Fatigability and Alternans in Isolated Skeletal Muscles

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

C. elegans Muscle Area Measurements: A Standardized Method to Quantify Striated Muscle Morphology

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.
