Heart Attacks

Heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions, occur when part of the heart muscle loses its blood supply, making them a major medical emergency and an important subject in biology. Usually, a fatty plaque in a coronary artery ruptures and triggers a blood clot that obstructs blood flow, depriving cardiomyocytes of oxygen and causing ischemia, cellular injury, and tissue death. Studying this process clarifies how the cardiovascular system responds to vascular damage and informs prevention, diagnosis, and treatments such as restoring coronary blood flow. Research also examines inflammation, tissue repair, and the long-term effects of scar formation on heart function.

Acid Attack on Concrete

2024

When acids come into contact with concrete, they initiate a chemical reaction that dissolves the hydrated cement paste. This process leads to softening and structural weakening of the concrete. This issue is commonly observed in environments such as chimneys, sewers, and industrial settings. The severity of the damage increases as the pH of the water interacting with the concrete drops below 6.5. In particular, a pH under 4.5 can cause significant concrete damage. The rate at which hydrogen...

Selecting Competitors to Attack or Avoid

2024

In competitive marketing, companies strategically decide which competitors to challenge or avoid based on market share, product offerings, and operational efficiency. Attacking a competitor involves identifying exploitable weaknesses, such as poor customer service, outdated products, or inefficient processes. Smaller companies often successfully challenge larger firms by leveraging their agility, offering more responsive customer support or faster innovation cycles. For example, ride-sharing...

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

2024

Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt. Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...

This is a case report of a patient with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) who received a total artificial heart (TAH) as a bridge to heart transplant. The TAH was successfully implanted with modifications to accommodate the patient's congenitally malformed heart.

Transient Ischemic Attack l: Introduction

2026

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a brief episode of neurological dysfunction caused by a temporary, focal reduction in cerebral blood flow. Although symptoms resemble those of an ischemic stroke, the interruption in perfusion is short-lived and does not cause permanent infarction. TIAs are clinically important because they often serve as early warning events for future stroke.Mechanisms of Transient Cerebral IschemiaTransient cerebral ischemia may arise through several mechanisms. One...
