Iron Particle Infusion

Iron particle infusion is a method for introducing iron-containing particles into a biological system to modify local iron availability and study how organisms handle this essential element. After infusion, particles may remain in suspension, dissolve gradually, or be taken up by cells, where released iron can enter storage, transport, and metabolic pathways or contribute to oxidative reactions. In biology, this approach supports investigations of iron uptake, distribution, cellular responses, and toxicity under controlled experimental conditions. It can also inform research on particle-based delivery systems and biomaterials, linking material properties with biological activity and helping clarify how iron influences cellular and tissue function.

Dynamic light scattering (DLS) has emerged as a suitable assay for evaluating the particle size and distribution of intravenously administered iron-carbohydrate complexes. However, the protocols lack standardization and need to be modified for each iron-carbohydrate complex analyzed. The present protocol describes the application and special considerations for the analysis of iron sucrose.
