Knee Extensor Strength

Knee extensor strength is the capacity of the muscles that straighten the knee, primarily the quadriceps, to generate force or rotational torque, making it an important measure of lower-limb function. It depends on neural activation of muscle fibers, the size and condition of the quadriceps, and the mechanical leverage of the knee joint; testing commonly quantifies force during controlled knee extension. In biology and human movement research, knee extensor strength helps characterize neuromuscular performance, functional capacity, and changes associated with training, injury, aging, or disease. These measurements can support studies of locomotion, muscle adaptation, rehabilitation, and physical performance.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.
