Lichens

Lichens are stable symbiotic associations between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner, usually a green alga or cyanobacterium, that form distinct organisms capable of living in demanding environments. The fungal partner provides structure, protection, water retention, and access to minerals, while the photosynthetic partner produces carbohydrates; cyanobacteria may also supply biologically fixed nitrogen. Lichens colonize surfaces such as rocks, bark, and soil, contributing to weathering, soil formation, nutrient cycling, and ecological succession. Because many species respond sensitively to air pollution, moisture, and environmental change, biology researchers use lichens in biodiversity studies and as indicators of ecosystem health.

Biodiversity and Human Values

Human civilization relies on biodiversity in many ways. Sudden changes in species biodiversity result in environmental changes that can modify weather patterns and therefore human civilizations. Humans are dependent on agriculture, which developed when ancestral humans found species that made suitable foods. At least 11,000 years ago, humans started to select plant and animal species to be cultivated on farms. Going back for thousands of years, humans have been artificially selecting species...

Finite Element Analysis Model for Assessing Expansion Patterns from Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion

2023

A set of novel finite element models of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) that could perform a clinically required amount of expander activation with various angles of buccal osteotomy was created for further analysis of the expansion patterns of the hemimaxillae in all three dimensions.

Here we describe a method for the isolation of hepatic stellate cells from mouse liver. For stellate cell purification, mouse livers are digested in situ and in vitro by pronase-collagenase treatment prior to density gradient centrifugation. This technique yields highly pure hepatic stellate cells.
