Muscular Wall

A muscular wall is a layer of muscle that surrounds and supports a hollow organ or tubular structure, allowing it to change shape, generate pressure, and move its contents. In many organs, smooth muscle cells contract when actin and myosin interact in response to autonomic nerve signals, hormones, or local chemical cues; coordinated contractions can produce processes such as peristalsis or regulate vessel diameter. Muscular walls are essential in the digestive tract, blood vessels, urinary bladder, and reproductive system, where their structure and activity control transport, flow, and organ function. Studying them helps explain normal physiology and disorders involving motility, circulation, or contractility.

The Muscular System

2024

The muscular system is essential to the body's overall structure and function, playing a crucial role in movement, stability, and internal processes. It consists of three distinct types of muscle tissue: the skeletal, the smooth, and the cardiac muscles. Skeletal Muscles: These muscles are under our conscious control and enable movement. They are attached to bones by tendons, and their contraction and relaxation allow us to move. Additionally, they generate heat during physical activity,...

We present a method for microfluidic deposition of patterned genipin and fibronectin on PDMS substrates, allowing extended viability of vascular smooth muscle cell-dense tissues. This tissue fabrication method is combined with previous vascular muscular thin film technology to measure vascular contractility over disease-relevant time courses.

Glycan Profiling of Plant Cell Wall Polymers using Microarrays

A technique called Comprehensive Microarray Polymer Profiling (CoMPP) for the characterisation of plant cell wall glycans is described. This method combines the specificity of monoclonal antibodies directed to defined glycan-epitopes with a miniature microarray analytical platform allowing screening of glycan occurrence in a broad range of biological contexts.

Battery of Behavioral Tests Assessing General Locomotion, Muscular Strength, and Coordination in Mice

Behavioral testing is used in pre-clinical trials to assess the phenotypic effects of a disease or treatment on an animal's wellbeing. In order to globally assess motor functioning, we selected tests for general locomotion, muscular strength, and coordination: the open field test, the mesh test, and the rotarod test, respectively.

A Simple and Low-cost Assay for Measuring Ambulation in Mouse Models of Muscular Dystrophy

This protocol describes a flexible, low-cost system for measuring mouse ambulation in an open field activity assay. We show that a 6-minute ambulation assay based on this system detects a decrease in voluntary movement in mdx mice, and accurately distinguishes improvement in a muscle-specific rescue of these animals.
