Neurotoxic Alkaloid

A neurotoxic alkaloid is a nitrogen-containing natural compound that disrupts nervous system function, making it important in biology, ecology, and toxicology. These molecules act through diverse mechanisms, including binding neurotransmitter receptors or ion channels, altering synaptic signaling and membrane excitability, and potentially producing tremors, seizures, paralysis, or respiratory failure. Many plants and other organisms use neurotoxic alkaloids as chemical defenses against predators, while their specific molecular targets help researchers study neural communication. Understanding these compounds supports toxin identification, environmental risk assessment, pharmacological research, and the development of strategies for diagnosing and managing poisoning.

An Efficient and Rapid HPLC-QQQ-MS Method for the Quantitation of Tropane Alkaloids in Medicinal Plants

2026

This study developed a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QQQ-MS) method to identify and quantify tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, anisodamine, scopolamine) in Anisodus tanguticus. The method proved rapid, accurate, and reliable for high-throughput analysis of medicinal plants.

Treatment of Rat Coronal Slices with a Neurotoxic Peptide

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to prepare and treat rat brain hemislices with a neurotoxic peptide to mimic neurodegeneration. The protocol allows for analyzing neurodegenerative events by directly comparing control and treated slices in the same anatomical plane.

Microglia as a Surrogate Biosensor to Determine Nanoparticle Neurotoxicity

2016

Microglia (immune cells of the brain), are used as a surrogate biosensor to determine how nanoparticles influence neurotoxicity. We describe a series of experiments designed to assay microglial response to nanoparticles and exposure of hypothalamic neurons to supernatant from activated microglia to determine neurotoxicity.

An Assay to Study Effect of Test Compound against PolyQ-Mediated Neurotoxicity in Worms

2025

In this video, we describe a method to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of a test compound, astragalan, on neuronal survival in Caenorhabditis elegans from polyQ-mediated neurotoxicity. The assay uses Caenorhabditis elegans expressing the abnormally expanded polyQ repeats fused to GFP in their ASH neurons to measure neuronal survival following test compound treatment.

2012

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.
