Oxygen Absorber Pack

An oxygen absorber pack is a sealed sachet that removes molecular oxygen from an enclosed environment, helping preserve oxygen-sensitive materials and create conditions suitable for anaerobic biology. Most packs contain iron powder, which reacts with oxygen and moisture through oxidation, lowering the oxygen concentration inside a sealed culture container; some formulations also use catalysts or salts to accelerate the reaction. In microbiology, oxygen absorber packs support the growth and study of anaerobic bacteria by maintaining low-oxygen conditions during incubation, transport, or storage. They provide a practical alternative to specialized anaerobic chambers for selected laboratory applications.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Single and Two-phase Flow in a Packed Bed Reactor

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA The goal of this experiment is to determine the magnitude of maldistribution in typical packed bed reactors in both single phase and two-phase (gas-liquid) flow and evaluate the effects of this maldistribution on pressure drop. The concepts of residence time distribution and dispersion are introduced through the use of tracers, and these concepts are related to physical...

We present an experimental procedure for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in cerebral vasculature based on oxygen-dependent quenching of phosphorescence. Animal preparation and imaging procedures were outlined for both large field of view CCD-based imaging of pO2 in rats and 2-photon excitation based imaging of pO2 in mice.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...
