Peg Silane Modulation

PEG silane modulation is the controlled adjustment of a material’s surface properties using polyethylene glycol (PEG)-functionalized silanes, an approach important for studying and engineering biological interfaces. Silane groups bond to hydroxyl-rich surfaces, while attached PEG chains form a hydrated, sterically protective layer that can reduce nonspecific protein adsorption and regulate cell interactions. By varying PEG chain length, surface density, or coupling conditions, researchers can tune wettability, resistance to fouling, and biomolecule accessibility. In biology, these modified surfaces support biosensors, microfluidic devices, implants, and cell-culture platforms by improving interface control and experimental reproducibility.
