Postnatal Environment

The postnatal environment encompasses the physical, nutritional, social, and microbial conditions that surround an organism after birth and shape survival, development, and health. Through factors such as feeding, caregiving, sensory stimulation, temperature, stress, and exposure to microorganisms, it influences neural and hormonal signaling, immune maturation, metabolism, and patterns of gene expression. In biology, studying the postnatal environment helps explain how early experiences affect growth, behavior, disease susceptibility, and adaptation across the lifespan. This framework supports research in developmental biology, neuroscience, immunology, and medicine, including investigations of early-life interventions and long-term health outcomes.
