Reflex Seizures

Reflex seizures are epileptic events consistently triggered by specific sensory, cognitive, or somatosensory stimuli rather than occurring unpredictably. They arise when a trigger engages hyperexcitable cortical networks, producing excessive synchronized neuronal firing that can spread and disrupt normal brain function; triggers may include flashing lights, patterned visual input, reading, or touch, depending on the individual. Recognizing reflex seizures helps clinicians distinguish stimulus-linked epilepsy from other seizure disorders, use patient history and electroencephalography to identify triggers, and tailor counseling, treatment, and safety planning.

Electroconvulsive Seizures in Rats and Fractionation of Their Hippocampi to Examine Seizure-induced Changes in Postsynaptic Density Proteins

Electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) is an experimental animal model of electroconvulsive therapy for severe depression. ECS globally stimulates activity in the hippocampus, leading to synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Here, we describe methods for ECS induction in rats and for subcellular fractionation of their hippocampi to examine seizure-induced changes in synaptic proteins.

Handling-Induced Seizures in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of handling-induced seizures in a mouse infected with Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV). The infected mouse, which has hyperexcitable neurons, is exposed to external physical stimuli. This exposure causes stress, leading to abnormal electrical activity in the neurons, which results in seizures.

(2017)This video demonstrates the induction of an acute electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) in a rat model to study seizure-induced neuroplasticity. Researchers apply electrical stimulation via ear-clip electrodes, triggering neuronal hyperexcitability and clonus. This model helps investigate synaptic plasticity, seizure...

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.
