Root Growth Analysis

Root Growth Analysis is the study of how plant roots develop over time by measuring features such as length, diameter, branching, and growth direction. It commonly uses repeated observations or images to track root elongation, which occurs as cells divide in the root apical meristem and expand behind it, while environmental cues such as gravity, water, and nutrients influence growth patterns. In biology, this analysis helps researchers evaluate plant development, root system architecture, and responses to drought, nutrient availability, or other conditions. The resulting measurements support studies of plant health, resource acquisition, crop performance, and experimental treatments.

Primary and Secondary Growth in Roots and Shoots

2026

Vascular plants, which account for over 90% of the Earth’s vegetation, all undergo primary growth—which lengthens roots and shoots. Many land plants, notably woody plants, also undergo secondary growth—which thickens roots and shoots.Primary and secondary growth can occur simultaneously in a plant. While primary growth occurs in newer plant regions, secondary growth transpires in regions that have completed primary growth. There are overlaps and distinctions between root growth and shoot growth.

Bacterial Growth Curve Analysis and its Environmental Applications

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...
