Sex Specific Biomarkers

Sex-specific biomarkers are measurable biological features whose levels, activity, or diagnostic value differ among biological sex groups, reflecting variation in chromosomes, hormones, gene regulation, or physiology. Researchers identify them by measuring proteins, metabolites, transcripts, or DNA variants in biological samples and comparing patterns across groups while accounting for age, disease status, and other confounding factors. In biology and medicine, these markers can clarify disease mechanisms, improve risk prediction and diagnosis, guide sex-aware treatment decisions, and explain why individuals respond differently to drugs or environmental exposures. Careful validation supports more representative and effective biomedical research.

2016

Astrocytes are one of the most important key players in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we are reporting a practical method of sexed hippocampal astrocyte culture protocol in order to study the mechanisms underlying the astrocyte function in male and female neonate pups after in-vitro ischemia.

Sex Hormone Detection In Human Tear Film Using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays

2026

This protocol describes an optimized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method to detect and quantify 17β-estradiol and testosterone in human tear fluid collected via microcapillary tubes. This approach enables minimally invasive measurement of tear hormone levels.

This protocol provides a convenient set of methods, which enables extremely fast, easy, non-invasive, reliable and low-cost, molecular sex determination of birds and their non-invasive, quick, safe and easily recognizable marking shortly after hatching. Only limited handling of chicks is required. This convenient toolbox of methods complies entirely with the RRR-guidelines.

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.
