Sleep Lamp Examination

Sleep Lamp Examination is a specialized biological assessment of how exposure to a sleep lamp, or controlled light source, influences sleep-related behavior and physiology. The examination works by varying light conditions and observing responses governed by photoreception and circadian regulation, in which light-sensitive pathways help synchronize the biological clock with the environment. In biology, this approach can support studies of sleep timing, activity patterns, and the effects of artificial lighting on organisms. Its findings may clarify links between environmental light, daily biological rhythms, and rest, while providing a basis for controlled investigations of sleep and circadian biology.

The recording of electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) in freely behaving mice is a critical step to correlate behavior and physiology with sleep and wakefulness. The experimental protocol described herein provides a cable-based system for acquiring EEG and EMG recordings in mice.

Quantitative Measurement of the Immune Response and Sleep in Drosophila

To understand a link between the immune response and behavior, we describe a method to measure locomotor behavior in Drosophila during bacterial infection as well as the ability of flies to mount an immune response by monitoring survival, bacterial load, and real-time activity of a key regulator of innate immunity, NFκB.

2014

We present a protocol used to discover an interactive effect between sleep and cortisol on memory consolidation, particularly for negative arousing images. Specifically, the experimental design utilizes eye tracking, salivary cortisol analysis, and behavioral memory testing – methods that can be used with both healthy and clinical participants.
