Small-scale Production

Small-scale production is the controlled manufacture of a biological product or material in limited quantities, often for laboratory studies, teaching, or early-stage process development. In biology, it typically involves cultivating cells, microorganisms, or tissues under defined conditions while adjusting factors such as nutrient supply, temperature, pH, aeration, and incubation time to support growth and product formation. This scale allows researchers to test protocols, compare yields, identify contamination or reproducibility problems, and refine processes before expansion to larger systems. Small-scale production supports the development and study of biologically derived products while reducing material use and development costs.

Despite the outstanding mechanical and biochemical properties of spider silks, this material cannot be harvested in large quantities by conventional means. Here we describe an efficient strategy to spin artificial spider silk fibers, which is an important process for investigators studying spider silk production and their use as next-generation biomaterials.

Methods for generating large-scale gRNA libraries should be simple, efficient and cost-effective. We describe a protocol for the production of gRNA libraries based on enzymatic digestion of target DNA. This method, CORALINA (comprehensive gRNA library generation through controlled nuclease activity) presents an alternative to costly custom oligonucleotide synthesis.
