Streptococcus Group G

Streptococcus Group G refers to streptococci identified by a specific Lancefield group G carbohydrate antigen in their cell wall, a classification that helps distinguish related bacteria in clinical microbiology. Many human isolates belong to Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis and appear as beta-hemolytic colonies because they produce factors that lyse red blood cells on blood agar. These bacteria may colonize the throat or skin but can cause pharyngitis, cellulitis, wound infections, and occasionally severe invasive disease such as bacteremia or necrotizing infection. Studying Group G Streptococcus supports accurate diagnosis, antimicrobial treatment, surveillance, and understanding of host-pathogen interactions.
