Systole Diastole

Systole and diastole are the two alternating phases of the cardiac cycle that enable the heart to circulate blood through the lungs and body. During systole, the ventricles contract, raising pressure and ejecting blood into the pulmonary artery and aorta; during diastole, they relax, allowing the chambers to refill as pressure falls. The timing and coordination of these phases depend on electrical conduction through the heart and the opening and closing of cardiac valves. Understanding systole and diastole helps explain pulse pressure, blood pressure measurements, heart sounds, and disorders that impair cardiac pumping or filling.

Accurate, causality-based quantification of global diastolic function has been achieved by kinematic modeling-based analysis of transmitral flow via the Parametrized Diastolic Filling (PDF) formalism. PDF generates unique stiffness, relaxation, and load parameters and elucidates 'new' physiology while providing sensitive and specific indexes of dysfunction.

A Rat Model of Pressure Overload Induced Moderate Remodeling and Systolic Dysfunction as Opposed to Overt Systolic Heart Failure

We describe the creation of a rat model of pressure overload induced moderate remodeling and early systolic dysfunction where signal transduction pathways involved in the initiation of the remodeling process are activated. This animal model will aid in identifying molecular targets for applying early therapeutic anti-remodeling strategies for heart failure.

A specific and rapid protocol to simultaneously investigate right heart function, lung inflammation, and the immune response is described as a learning tool. Video and figures describe physiology and microdissection techniques in an organized team-approach that is adaptable to be used for small to large sized studies.
