Thoracotomy Technique

Thoracotomy technique is a surgical approach that creates an opening through the chest wall to access structures within the thoracic cavity. The procedure typically involves an incision between the ribs, careful separation of intercostal tissues, and retraction of the ribs to expose the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, or other thoracic organs, followed by layered closure. In biology and biomedical research, thoracotomy provides controlled access for studying respiratory and cardiovascular function, collecting tissue, and performing experimental interventions in animal models. Clinical applications include treatment of thoracic trauma, lung disease, and conditions requiring direct access to chest organs.

Implantation of a biograft to treat myocardial infarction induced by LAD ligation in a rodent model has conventionally required two open-heart surgeries. In order to reduce mortality and provide optimal conditions for fixation of solid and gelatinous biomatrices associated with cells, minimally invasive procedures have been developed.

The goal of this protocol is to describe in detail the technique of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement through a right anterior mini-thoracotomy and central aortic cannulation. This technique can potentially enhance patients' comfort and, by reducing post-operative morbidity, promote lowering the length of stay and global costs.

Here we introduce a standardized procedure for endotracheal intubation via tracheotomy followed by thoracotomy in rats, aimed at enhancing the precision and reproducibility of non-survival applications requiring invasive ventilation and exposure of thoracic organs in in vivo rat models.

Modified Technique for Coronary Artery Ligation in Mice

The surgical procedure used to induce experimental myocardial infarction in mice begins with left thoracotomy between the third and the fourth ribs in order to visualize the anterior surface of the heart and left lung. The left coronary artery is ligated, the chest is closed and the mouse is allowed to recover spontaneously.

Measurement Accuracy The ability to repeat an experiment and get the same results, or reproducibility, is essential in scientific research. However, it’s impossible to repeat an experiment if you don’t know how you did it. Thus, scientists keep detailed records of their experiments in lab notebooks. These records include important information like the amount of each material used and descriptions of each step of the procedure. Equipment, like balances and volumetric or graduated glassware, is...
