Underfill State

An underfill state is a physiological condition in which effective circulating blood volume falls because fluid leaves the vascular space, even when total body water is increased. Reduced plasma oncotic pressure, increased vascular permeability, or fluid accumulation outside blood vessels can shift water into tissues and decrease arterial filling; the kidneys respond by activating the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system and releasing antidiuretic hormone, promoting sodium and water retention. This mechanism helps explain edema and fluid imbalance in conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, cirrhosis, and severe inflammation. Recognizing an underfill state supports interpretation of disease mechanisms and guides investigation of circulatory and renal responses.

We developed the Visual-Motor Response to quantitate the motor output of larval zebrafish in response to light increments and decrements. We also examined zebrafish vision mutants, including the no optokinetic response (nrc) mutants, which were thought to be completely blind when tested by another vision assay, the optokinetic reflex.
