Viability Restoration

Viability restoration is the recovery of living cells, tissues, or organisms after exposure to conditions that impair survival, function, or metabolic activity. It works by reducing cellular damage and reestablishing essential processes such as membrane integrity, energy production, water balance, and homeostasis, allowing biological systems to resume normal activity. In biology, viability restoration supports the recovery of stressed cultures, cryopreserved specimens, damaged tissues, and other biological materials before analysis or use. Assessing restoration through survival, growth, metabolic activity, or functional assays helps researchers distinguish temporary cellular stress from irreversible injury and improves the reliability of experimental and therapeutic applications.

Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Therapeutic compounds are often first examined in vitro with viability assays. Blind cell counts by a human observer can be highly sensitive to small changes in cell number but do not assess function. Computerized viability assays, as described here, can assess both structure and function in an objective manner.

Source: Calatayud Arroyo, M., et al. Assessing the Viability of a Synthetic Bacterial Consortium on the In Vitro Gut Host-microbe Interface. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a method to evaluate the viability of anaerobic oral bacteria using fluorescent dyes and flow cytometry. It begins with culturing bacteria in oxygen-free broth, followed by resuspending a single colony from a blood agar plate. After incubation and dilution, the culture is stained with membrane-permeable and...
