Vitreous Gel Extraction

Vitreous gel extraction is the controlled removal and collection of the transparent, gel-like vitreous humor that fills the space between the lens and retina, enabling its biological and physical properties to be studied. The procedure typically involves opening the eye, separating the vitreous from surrounding tissues, and transferring the cohesive gel while minimizing contamination and structural disruption. Extracted vitreous supports analyses of proteins, metabolites, cells, and extracellular matrix components, as well as studies of ocular biomechanics and disease. It can help connect changes in gel composition or organization with aging, retinal disorders, injury, and therapeutic development.
