Water Molecule Properties

Water molecule properties describe the structural and chemical features that make water essential to life and influential across biological systems. Because each molecule has a bent shape and polar O–H bonds, it forms hydrogen bonds with neighboring molecules and other polar substances, producing cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, and strong solvent capacity. These properties help water transport nutrients and wastes, stabilize temperature, support protein and membrane structure, and provide the medium for biochemical reactions. Understanding water’s polarity, phase behavior, and interactions with solutes is therefore fundamental to explaining cellular organization, physiology, and ecosystem processes.

Kinetic Molecular Theory and Gas Laws Explain Properties of Gas Molecules

2020

The test of the kinetic molecular theory (KMT) and its postulates is its ability to explain and describe the behavior of a gas. The various gas laws (Boyle’s, Charles’s, Gay-Lussac’s, Avogadro’s, and Dalton’s laws) can be derived from the assumptions of the KMT, which have led chemists to believe that the assumptions of the theory accurately represent the properties of gas molecules. The Kinetic Molecular Theory Explains the Behavior of Gases Recalling that gas pressure is exerted by rapidly...

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

We introduce a fast fluorescence-based assay that monitors the rate of fluorescence quenching as a measure of gramicidin channel activity. The gramicidin channels are used as molecular force transducers to monitor changes in lipid bilayer properties as sensed by bilayer spanning proteins.
