Lung Imaging

Lung imaging is the use of radiographic and other imaging methods to visualize lung structure, function, and disease, making it central to detecting and characterizing pulmonary tumors. Techniques such as chest radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) generate images through differences in X-ray attenuation, magnetic behavior, or radiotracer uptake; contrast agents can further distinguish tissues and blood flow. In cancer research, these approaches support tumor localization, staging, treatment planning, and response assessment, while quantitative image analysis can reveal changes in tumor size, metabolism, and heterogeneity that guide biomarker development and clinical study design.

We describe a relatively simple method for ex vivo live imaging of the tumor cell-stroma interactions within lung metastasis, utilizing fluorescent reporters in mice. Using spinning-disk confocal microscopy, this technique enables visualization of live cells for at least 4 hr and could be adapted to study other inflammatory lung conditions.
