Ice Hemisphere Formation

Ice hemisphere formation is the controlled production of a half-spherical ice structure by freezing water within a shaped boundary or against a suitable surface. As heat is removed, water molecules slow and organize through hydrogen bonding into a crystalline lattice; nucleation initiates solidification, while the container geometry and freezing conditions determine the hemisphere’s shape, size, and structural uniformity. In chemistry, this process illustrates phase transitions, crystallization, heat transfer, and the relationship between molecular interactions and macroscopic form. Studying ice hemisphere formation also supports demonstrations of solidification and surface effects, while providing a simple model for controlling crystal growth in laboratory and educational settings.

Cerebral Hemispheres

2024

The human brain, a complex organ, is functionally divided into two cerebral hemispheres—left and right. These hemispheres are interconnected by a structure of paramount importance, the corpus callosum. This substantial bundle of neural fibers is not just a bridge between the hemispheres but a crucial element for the brain's comprehensive functioning. It enables efficient communication between the two hemispheres, allowing each side of the brain to control and receive sensory and motor...

Recording of Local Field Potential from Both Hemispheres of the Mouse Brain

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo recording of local field potential (LFP) from bilateral M2 areas of the mouse brain. An anesthetized mouse is secured and prepared for the procedure. To record LFPs, insert microelectrodes into the target coordinates of the bilateral M2 areas, which are responsible for complex motor movements.

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the unilateral hemisphere of rat brain, by placing a 25-mm figure-8 coil 1 cm lateral to the vertex on the biauricular line and angulating the coil by 45°. An in-house water cooling system was used for rTMS for more than 20 min.

Ex utero Electroporation and Whole Hemisphere Explants: A Simple Experimental Method for Studies of Early Cortical Development

This protocol describes an improved explant procedure that involves ex utero electroporation, dissection and culture of entire cerebral hemispheres from the embryonic mouse. The preparation facilitates pharmacological studies and assays of gene function during early cortical development.

Central and Divided Visual Field Presentation of Emotional Images to Measure Hemispheric Differences in Motivated Attention

2017

This study compared central versus divided visual field presentations of emotional images to assess differences in motivated attention between the two hemispheres. The late positive potential (LPP) was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) methodologies to assess motivated attention.
