Sol Preparation

Sol preparation is the chemical process of producing a sol, a colloidal dispersion in which finely divided solid particles remain distributed throughout a liquid medium. It works by either dispersing a bulk material into smaller particles or generating colloidal particles through controlled chemical reactions, such as hydrolysis, reduction, or precipitation; particle size, surface charge, solvent, pH, and temperature help determine stability. Properly prepared sols resist rapid settling and can form gels or other structured materials. In chemistry, sol preparation supports studies of colloidal behavior and enables the production of catalysts, pigments, coatings, ceramics, and advanced functional materials.

2013

A guided material screening approach to develop sol-gel derived protein doped microarrays using an emerging pin-printing method of fabrication is described. This methodology is demonstrated through the development of acetylcholinesterase and multikinase microarrays, which are used for cost-effective small-molecule screening.

Preparation of Epoxides

2023

Overview Epoxides result from alkene oxidation, which can be achieved by a) air, b) peroxy acids, c) hypochlorous acids, and d) halohydrin cyclization. Epoxidation with Peroxy Acids Epoxidation of alkenes via oxidation with peroxy acids involves the conversion of a carbon–carbon double bond to an epoxide using the oxidizing agent meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, commonly known as MCPBA. Since the O–O bond of peroxy acids is very weak, the addition of electrophilic oxygen of peroxy acids to...

Preparation of Amides

2023

Amides are synthesized by treating carboxylic acids with amines in the presence of dehydrating agents like dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). The DCC-promoted synthesis of amides begins with the protonation of DCC by carboxylic acid. The protonation makes it a better acceptor. Next, the addition of carboxylate to the protonated carbodiimide gives a reactive acylating agent. Subsequently, the amine acts as a nucleophile that attacks the acylating agent to form a tetrahedral intermediate. In the...
