Crepitus

Crepitus is a crackling, popping, or grating sensation or sound produced by movement in a joint or soft tissue, and it can provide a useful clinical sign. In musculoskeletal assessment, it commonly reflects irregular contact between damaged or roughened articular surfaces, while gas movement within synovial fluid can cause brief joint popping; in soft tissues, air trapped beneath the skin may create a fine crackling feel. Clinicians evaluate crepitus alongside pain, swelling, restricted motion, injury history, and other findings to help distinguish benign joint sounds from osteoarthritis, trauma, inflammation, or subcutaneous emphysema and determine whether further assessment is needed.
