Patient Monitoring

Patient monitoring is the systematic observation and recording of a patient’s physiological condition to detect changes, assess treatment response, and support clinical decisions. In clinical settings, sensors and bedside or remote devices measure variables such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and temperature, while repeated measurements and trend analysis help distinguish transient variation from deterioration. Monitoring may be continuous or intermittent, with thresholds generating alerts for timely assessment and intervention. It supports diagnosis, anesthesia and critical care, postoperative recovery, chronic disease management, and early recognition of complications, improving communication and enabling care to adapt to changing patient needs.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of capnography sampling lines used in conjunction with a portable bedside capnography monitor. Sampling lines from 7 manufacturers were evaluated for tensile strength, rise time, and ETCO2 accuracy as a function of respiratory rate or supplemental oxygen flow rate.

Here, we present a protocol to detect tumor somatic mutations in circulating DNA present in patient biological fluids (biofluids). Our droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR)-based method enables quantification of the tumor mutation allelic frequency (MAF), facilitating a minimally invasive complement to diagnosis and temporal monitoring of tumor response.

Presented here is a protocol for non-invasively monitoring cerebral hemodynamics of neurocritical patients in real-time and at the bedside using diffuse optics. Specifically, the proposed protocol uses a hybrid diffuse optical systems to detect and display real-time information on cerebral oxygenation, cerebral blood flow and cerebral metabolism.
