Pig Embryo Sexing

Pig embryo sexing is the determination of an embryo’s genetic sex, typically by identifying whether it carries an X or Y chromosome, and it provides a way to study sex-specific development before birth. The process commonly uses a small embryo biopsy followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or other molecular assays that detect Y-chromosome-specific DNA sequences, while control markers confirm that amplification occurred. In developmental biology, embryo sexing supports research on sex-related differences in gene expression, growth, and early organ formation. It also contributes to assisted reproduction, selective breeding, embryo transfer, and analysis of how culture conditions influence embryonic development.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Acclimation and Positive Reinforcement Training Pigs are social animals that respond best to calm, low-stress handling techniques. Acclimation and positive reinforcement training are important refinement strategies recommended...

Primary disassociated embryonic hippocampal neuronal cultures are useful for investigating the signaling mechanisms involved in neuron death. Sexing the embryos before the isolation and dissociation of the hippocampus allows the preparation of separate male and female cultures, which enables the researcher to identify and investigate sex-specific cell signaling.
