Doctor Blading Technique

The doctor blading technique is an engineering method for forming uniform films or coatings by spreading a liquid, paste, or slurry across a substrate with a controlled blade. As the blade moves over the surface, its gap, speed, and the material’s viscosity govern the wet-film thickness, coverage, and deposition uniformity. After drying or curing, the deposited layer can provide a functional coating or structured material surface. Engineers use this scalable, low-waste process in research and manufacturing to fabricate thin-film devices, composite layers, energy-related materials, and other components requiring controlled thickness and reproducible surface properties.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...

We describe the use of synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques to probe details of intercalation/deintercalation processes in electrode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. Both in situ and ex situ experiments are used to understand structural behavior relevant to the operation of...

Measurement Accuracy The ability to repeat an experiment and get the same results, or reproducibility, is essential in scientific research. However, it’s impossible to repeat an experiment if you don’t know how you did it. Thus, scientists keep detailed records of their experiments in lab notebooks. These records include important information like the amount of each material used and descriptions of each step of the procedure. Equipment, like balances and volumetric or graduated glassware, is...
