Waveguide Fabrication Procedure

A waveguide fabrication procedure is a sequence of manufacturing steps used to create structures that confine and guide electromagnetic waves, enabling controlled signal transmission in photonic and electronic devices. Typically, material layers are deposited or bonded onto a substrate, patterned by lithography, and selectively etched or shaped to form a core, cladding, or conductive channel with the required geometry and refractive-index or conductivity contrast. Process conditions such as alignment, thickness, surface quality, and dimensional accuracy strongly influence propagation loss and performance. These procedures support integrated optics, optical communication, sensors, microwave components, and other engineered systems requiring compact, reliable waveguides.

2012

Use of photonic crystal slow light waveguides and cavities has been widely adopted by the photonics community in many differing applications. Therefore fabrication and characterization of these devices are of great interest. This paper outlines our fabrication technique and two optical characterization methods, namely: interferometric (waveguides) and resonant scattering (cavities).

Terahertz Microfluidic Sensing Using a Parallel-plate Waveguide Sensor

The procedure for implementing a refractive index sensor for terahertz frequencies based on a grooved parallel-plate waveguide geometry is described here. The method yields a measurement of the refractive index of a small volume of liquid through monitoring of the shift in the resonant frequency of the waveguide...

Described here is a nanosphere lithography method for parallel fabrication of zero mode waveguides, which are arrays of nanoapertures in a metal-clad glass microscopy coverslip for single molecule imaging at nano- to micromolar concentrations of fluorophores. The method takes advantage of colloidal crystal self-assembly to create a waveguide template.

2012

An efficient approach for preparing nanofibers decorated with functional groups capable of specifically interacting with proteins is described. The approach first requires the preparation of a polymer functionalized with the appropriate functional group. The functional polymer is fabricated into nanofibers by electrospinning. The effectiveness of the binding of the nanofibers with a protein is studied by confocal microscopy.
