Diamond Anvil Cell

A diamond anvil cell is a high-pressure device that compresses a tiny sample between the polished tips of two opposing diamonds, enabling scientists to study matter under conditions found deep within Earth. Applied force is concentrated through the diamond culets, while the diamonds’ transparency allows measurements with infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, or X-ray diffraction during compression. In environmental sciences, this method helps characterize the behavior of water, minerals, gases, and carbon-bearing compounds at extreme pressures and temperatures. These measurements improve understanding of geochemical cycles, mineral transformations, subsurface carbon storage, and the physical processes that influence Earth’s interior and environment.
