Naked-eye Colorimetric Assay

A naked-eye colorimetric assay is an analytical test that identifies a target by producing a visible color change, allowing results to be interpreted without specialized instruments. In immunology and infection research, target molecules such as antigens or antibodies participate in selective binding reactions that trigger or reveal a color-producing chemical or enzymatic process; color intensity may provide qualitative or semiquantitative information about target abundance. These assays support rapid detection of infectious agents and immune responses, particularly when laboratory equipment is limited. Their simplicity, low cost, and visual readout make them useful for point-of-care testing, preliminary screening, and field-based diagnostics.

2016

In this manuscript, periodate oxidation and glutaraldehyde cross-linking methods for covalent immobilization of antibodies on paper discs are presented. The binding activity of immobilized antibodies was evaluated. Based on these results, a glutaraldehyde cross-linking method was used to develop a novel paper-based immunoassay for immunoglobulin G (IgG) detection.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.

ampliPHOX colorimetric detection technology is presented as an inexpensive alternative to fluorescence detection for microarrays. Based on photopolymerization, ampliPHOX produces solid polymer spots visible to the naked eye in just a few minutes. Results are then imaged and automatically interpreted with a simple yet powerful software package.
