The South African National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is a public laboratory network that provides diagnostic, research, and public-health laboratory support, making it central to identifying and monitoring infectious diseases. It works by processing patient specimens through methods such as culture, microscopy, serology, and nucleic-acid amplification, with results interpreted alongside clinical and epidemiological information. In immunology and infection, NHLS testing helps detect pathogens and immune responses, guide diagnosis and treatment, track outbreaks, and support antimicrobial-resistance surveillance. By linking routine laboratory data with national disease-control programs, the service strengthens evidence-based public-health decisions and population-level interventions.

Comprehensive & Cost Effective Laboratory Monitoring of HIV/AIDS: an African Role Model

Cited by 4 •

2010

Anti-retroviral therapy to treat HIV/AIDS is monitored in South Africa on a large scale. Flow cytometry is combined for haematology (CD45), immunology (CD4) and viral-load linked CD38 assay. Recorded at NHLS-SA laboratories, Johannesburg, these modern methods are cost-efficient with heightened local internal quality control, serving as role-models for resource-limited diagnostics.

Sea surface chlorophyll, temperature, sea level height, wind, and front data obtained or derived from satellite observations offer an effective way to characterize the ocean. Presented is a method for the comprehensive study of these data, including overall average, seasonal cycle, and intercorrelation analyses, to fully understand regional dynamics and ecosystems.

Using Fluorescent Proteins to Monitor Glycosome Dynamics in the African Trypanosome

2014

Glycosome dynamics in African trypanosomes are difficult to study by traditional cell biology techniques such as electron and fluorescence microscopy. As a means of observing dynamic organelle behavior, a fluorescent-organelle reporter system has been used in conjunction with flow cytometry to monitor real-time glycosome dynamics in live parasites.
