Biliary Drainage Demonstration

Biliary drainage is a clinical procedure that restores the flow of bile when blocked or impaired, helping relieve cholestasis, jaundice, and related complications. In a biliary drainage demonstration, imaging guides placement of a catheter or stent through the biliary system to bypass an obstruction and redirect bile into the intestine or an external collection bag. These techniques are used to manage obstruction caused by tumors, stones, inflammation, or postoperative injury, and may support infection control, symptom relief, and preparation for definitive treatment. Understanding the procedure also helps clinicians recognize anatomy, select an access route, and monitor drainage outcomes safely.

To help assess the molecular mechanisms underlying zebrafish biliary-driven liver regeneration, we established a liver injury model in which the nitroreductase-expressing hepatocytes are genetically ablated upon metronidazole treatment. In this protocol, we describe how to adeptly manipulate, monitor and analyze hepatocyte ablation and biliary-driven liver regeneration.
