Environmental Toxicant

Environmental toxicants are harmful chemical substances present in air, water, soil, food, or workplaces that can injure living organisms after exposure, making them important determinants of human health. They enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact and may alter cellular function through oxidative stress, receptor disruption, enzyme inhibition, DNA damage, or interference with normal development, depending on dose, duration, and individual susceptibility. In medicine, understanding environmental toxicants supports exposure assessment, clinical recognition of poisoning and chronic disease risks, biomonitoring, and prevention strategies that reduce contact and guide patient care.

2017

This work describes a new protocol to assess the ecotoxicity of pollutants, including emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials, using the marine bacterium Vibrio anguillarum. This method allows for the determination of the LC50, or mortality, the concentration that causes a 50% decrease in bacteria culturability, after a 6 h exposure.

Understanding enamel formation and possible alterations requires the study of ameloblast activity. Here, we describe a reliable and consistent method to micro-dissect enamel organs containing secretion- and maturation-stage ameloblasts that may be used for further quantitative and qualitative experimental procedures.

The intensely studied nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans can be transgenically engineered to express the human β-amyloid peptide (Aβ). Induced expression of Aβ in C. elegans muscle leads to a rapid, reproducible paralysis phenotype that can be used to monitor treatments that modulate Aβ toxicity.
