Frozen Elephant Trunk

Frozen elephant trunk is a hybrid aortic surgical technique that combines open replacement of the aortic arch with placement of an antegrade stent graft into the descending thoracic aorta. During circulatory arrest and arch reconstruction, the stented segment extends beyond the surgical graft to stabilize diseased aortic tissue, support blood flow, and help seal the proximal descending aorta. The procedure is used to treat extensive thoracic aortic aneurysms, chronic dissections, and other conditions involving both the arch and descending aorta. By addressing these regions in one operation, it can establish a platform for later endovascular or open repair, although careful patient selection and lifelong imaging surveillance remain essential.

An approach to analyze the migration of explanted cells (trunk neural crest cells) is described. This method is inexpensive, gentle, and capable of distinguishing chemotaxis from both chemokinesis and other influences on migratory polarity such as those derived from cell-cell interactions within the primary trunk neural crest cell culture.
