Iron Toxicity

Iron toxicity is a harmful condition in which excessive iron damages tissues, causing acute illness after overdose or chronic injury from iron accumulation. At high concentrations, unbound iron promotes oxidative stress by catalyzing the formation of reactive oxygen species, which disrupt cell membranes, impair mitochondrial function, and injure organs such as the gastrointestinal tract, liver, heart, and brain. In medicine, understanding iron toxicity supports rapid assessment of poisoning, monitoring of iron levels and organ function, and treatment decisions, including supportive care and, when appropriate, chelation therapy. It also informs safer management of iron supplementation and transfusion-related iron overload.
