Mri Volumetrics

MRI volumetrics is the quantitative measurement of anatomical structures or tissue volumes from magnetic resonance imaging scans, providing objective information beyond visual inspection. It works by acquiring three-dimensional MRI data and using image-processing algorithms to segment structures, assign voxels to tissues, and calculate their volumes, often with correction for head size and comparison with reference populations or repeated scans. In medicine, these measurements support assessment of brain atrophy, tumor burden, organ development, and treatment-related change. MRI volumetrics can strengthen diagnosis, monitor disease progression, and evaluate therapeutic response, although results depend on scan quality, acquisition protocols, and segmentation accuracy.

Lesion Explorer (LE) is a semi-automatic, image-processing pipeline developed to obtain regional brain tissue and subcortical hyperintensity lesion volumetrics from structural MRI of Alzheimer's disease and normal elderly. To ensure a high level of accuracy and reliability, the following is a video-guided, standardized protocol for LE's manual procedures.

Early detection of apoptosis may identify at-risk cell populations in a variety of diseases. Here we demonstrate a method to link an early apoptosis-detection protein (Annexin V) to a MRI-detectable iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO). This method may be extended to other proteins of interest to generate MRI-detectable molecular imaging probes.
