Neonatal Brain Health

Neonatal brain health refers to the normal development, protection, and functioning of the brain during the first 28 days of life, a critical period for long-term neurological outcomes. It depends on adequate oxygen and nutrient delivery, stable blood glucose and temperature, and coordinated maturation of neural networks; disrupted blood flow, infection, inflammation, or metabolic imbalance can contribute to brain injury. In medicine, neonatal brain health guides screening, neurological examination, cardiorespiratory monitoring, and imaging for infants at risk. Early recognition and supportive care can reduce complications, inform treatment decisions, and improve developmental follow-up for conditions such as prematurity and hypoxic-ischemic injury.

We performed unilateral carotid artery occlusion on postnatal day 7-10 CD-1 mouse pups to create a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) model and investigated the effects of HI brain injury. We studied neurobehavioral functions in these mice compared to non-operated normal mice.

Obtaining a Mixed Glial Cell Culture from a Neonatal Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrated the method of isolating and culturing cells from a neonatal mouse brain. It involved enzymatic and mechanical dissociation of the brain, followed by culturing in growth media lacking neuronal growth factor to obtain a mixed glial population.

Isolation of Oxytocin Receptor-Rich Nuclei from a Neonatal Rat Brain

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of oxytocin receptor-rich nuclei from the neonatal rat brain. Coronal slicing, followed by identification and precise punching of oxytocin receptor-rich brain nuclei, enables the effective extraction of oxytocin receptor-rich nuclei for further analysis.

Here, we describe a simple method of intracerebroventricular and intravascular injection of viral particles or fluorescent microbeads into the neonatal mouse brain. The localization pattern of the virus and nanoparticles could be detected by microscopic evaluation or by in situ hybridization.

Measuring Pain-Evoked Brain Activity in Neonates Using a Flat-Tip Probe Coupled to EEG

2025

This video demonstrates a method for measuring pain-evoked brain activity in infants. It outlines the procedure for positioning electrodes on the infant's head and applying pain stimuli to the infant's hand using a flat-tip probe. The video also shows the EEG recording process to identify brain activity in response to the stimuli.
